Former Cyclist Grischa Niermann Suspended for Doping

Recently former German cyclist Grischa Niermann came forward to admit his use of EPO from 2000-2003. Niermann came forward to admit his doping past to help fight for a clean sport and educate younger riders of his negative experiences. Although a coach now Niermann still received a reduced six month suspension that started on February 15th. Are any top level cyclists clean these days?

Lance Armstrong Might Admit to Doping

Cyclist Lance Armstrong is reportedly going to make a public admission that he used performance enhancing drugs and blood transfusions during his career. The New York Times reported Armstrong had been in contact with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. If Armstrong does come forward with this confession he is doing this to restore his eligibility for his sporting pursuits. To me it sounds like he could care less that he cheated or disappointed fans and just cares about himself.

Lance Armstrong Teammates Suspended Six Months

Last week American cyclists Tom Danielson, George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer, Christian Vande Velde and David Zabriski who all testified against Lance Armstrong for their roles in blood doping and usage of performance enhancing drugs have now been suspended from competition for six months. They recently painted a picture of Armstrong as the doping ring leader.

More Tour de France Doping

Although the 2012 Tour de France ended last weekend it still brought controversy this year as RadioShack-Nissan cyclist Frank Schleck of Luxembourg failed a doping test for the diuretic Xipamide. Schleck was in 12th place at the time the news broke which prompted his withdrawal from the race. A few days later Schleck's B sample also came back positive but he maintains his innocence and determined to find the cause of his contact with Xipamide. RadioShack was the team Lance Armstrong previously rode for and who is now under doping investigations by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Lance Armstrong Faces New Doping Charges

Cyclist and triathlete Lance Armstrong avoided criminal charges in February but a new round of doping charges are being brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Due to the new charges Armstrong is now currently banned from participating in World Triathlon Corporation sanctioned events which bans athletes under investigation for alleged doping offenses. If found guilty Armstrong may also face losing his Tour de France titles.

Cyclist Denis Galimzyanov Admits to Doping

Another cyclist has tested positive for doping. A couple of weeks ago cyclist Denis Galimzyanov tested positive for the blood booster erythropoietin (EPO). Galimzyanov admitted his wrong doing and said his team had nothing to do with it and was all his doing. Galimzyanov has been provisionally suspended and could face a ban from the sport of up to two years.

Another Tour de France Champion Banned for Doping

Jan Ullrich, a former Tour de France champion has been banned from cycling for two years for doping. The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced the findings on February 9th and stated he was part of the doping program by Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes that was revealed in 2006. How many former champions will be caught doping? This list keeps getting longer and sure we will see many more cyclists to come.

More Evidence Against Lance Armstrong

Cyclist Lance Armstrong reportedly made payments through a front company in Switzerland to a physician who was banned for doping.  Armstrong's former training advisor Michele Ferrari was also behind the anonymous company mentioned.  Swiss and Italian investigators reported this information recently to worldwide news outlets.

Tour de France Rider Fails Doping Test

The Tour de France kicked off July 2nd and now has its first rider to fail a doping test.  Russian rider Alexandr Kolobnev of the Katusha team failed a doping test from July 6th that contained traces of Hydrochlorothiazide.  Kolobnev had four days to submit a B sample and contest the positive result but his team decided to end his ride for the Tour.  Kolobnev was 69th at the time of his departure.

Former Lance Armstrong teammate Tyler Hamilton details on a recent 60 Minutes how he, Lance and other members of the U.S. Postal Service team used banned substances.  Hamilton was a gold medal cyclist who served a two-year suspension for doping and stated that Armstrong took what everyone else took.

Lance Armstrong Drug Case Moves Forward

It has been recently reported that U.S. investigators are moving forward with an investigation for a drug related case on cyclist Lance Armstrong.  Officials in France have received requests from U.S. authorities requesting evidence on Lance and other members of his former U.S. Postal team.

Cyclists Will Have to find Other Ways to Cheat

Alright so cycling is not one of my favorites but over the years quite a few cyclists have been caught using illegal growth hormones and blood doping to gain unfair advantages during there races and thought it had reason to be discussed here.  The Association of Professional Cyclists and Professional Cycling Council recently met and proposed an automatic four-year suspension for cyclists found doping, using growth hormones, use of EPO and blood transfusions.  It's a start but someone will always be ahead of the testing and finding new ways to cheat the system and this sport.  Cheating cyclists, is it really worth it?

It Must be the Steak

Three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol during this year's cycling race.  His reason, tainted steak he ate at a hotel.  Contador has been suspended by the International Cycling Union for suspected doping.

Cyclist Davide Rebellin Loses Doping Appeal

Cyclist Davide Rebellin lost an appeal yesterday which stripped him of his 2008 Olympic silver medal because of doping.  Months after the Beijing Games the IOC retested samples and found traces of the advanced EPO drug CERA.  Rebellin could be stripped of other race results and be suspended by cycling's governing body.

Floyd Landis Finally Admits to Doping and Accuses Lance Armstrong.

After four years of denying his positive test for synthetic testosterone following the 2006 Tour de France Floyd Landis came clean with ESPN.com yesterday and admitted to using performance enhancing drugs for most of his career.  During his years riding with the U.S. Postal Service and Phonak teams he tried everything from testosterone, human growth hormone, red blood cell booster erythropoietin, blood transfusions, female hormones and insulin.  Landis also confirmed several emails he sent to cycling and anti-doping officials over the last few weeks accusing dozens of other athletes including Lance Armstrong.  The World Anti-Doping Agency will open an investigation into these allegations but the International Cycling Union said these allegations were "scandalous and mischievous."

Lance Armstrong Teammate Suspended

Team RadioShack cyclist Li Fuyu has been suspended by the International Cycling Union after testing positive for the banned anabolic agent Clenbuterol during a Belgian race last month.  Li is suspended until the results of his B-sample are determined in the coming weeks.  If the B-sample is positive as well he will be removed from the RadioShack team that also includes Lance Armstrong.

U.S. Cyclist Floyd Landis in More Hot Water

U.S. cyclist Floyd Landis was already stripped of his 2006 Tour de France victory and banned for two years.  Now an international arrest warrant for Landis has been issued by a French judge.  Landis is suspected of data hacking at a doping laboratory.  Landis previously used the hacked files for his defense against him doping.  He tried to prove the lab mishandled the tests but in actuality he might have been part of the data hacking to cover up his results.
